LGBT Destination Marketing Workshop facilitated by Matt Skallerud, Pink Banana Media

We’ll be touching on the key topics of micro-targeting the LGBT traveler online via banner ads and Facebook, as well as delving in the world of LGBT travel bloggers and influencers. We'll show you how you’re able to target your specific traveler using programmatic advertising technology, and we’ll touch on the integration of an ad campaign such as this with social media and how it can incorporate blogs, photos and videos about LGBT travel to your destination, utilizing the same targeting power as well. We’ll also discuss the role of LGBT influencers, and how some of their social media activity can be leveraged to enhance and drive LGBT travel to your destination.
  1. Learn how to identify and engage with potential influencers in your region, focused on the LGBT travel world.
  2. Learn how to strategically target your LGBT traveler demographic using banner ads and Facebook ad targeting
  3. Better understanding of how the wide variety of social media tools can be used in an online LGBT tourism marketing campaign, including Twitter and Instagram.

Meet some of the top LGBTQ influencers in the travel industry today… they just happen to be here at Whistler Pride on behalf of the folks at Whistler Tourism, telling the story of this ever-growing LGBT ski week’s activities as seen through their eyes and through their unique storytelling style. We’ll be moderating a panel with these LGBTQ influencers, where they’ll be able to tell you more about their story, their experiences and how they’ve helped clients and destinations to get the word out, similar in scope to how traditional LGBT media has told the story in years past, but with the new tools of cell phones, digital cameras and social media thrown into the mix!

- The Nomadic Boys (London, UK)

Stefan and Sebastien are a gay couple from Europe who quit their lives and jobs in London in June 2014 to travel the world. They spent 2 years in Asia and set up Nomadic Boys to chronicle their travels. They now focus all their time and energy on Nomadic Boys, which has become one of the most respected brands in the gay travel industry.
The boys are currently on a big trip across Latin America, working with local business to promote them to gay travelers. The boys' readers are predominantly affluent men, aged 25-50, based in North America, UK and Europe, who are sophisticated travelers looking for romantic adventures, gourmet and cultural experiences.

- A Couple of Men (Amsterdam, Netherlands)

Karl and Daan, a German-Dutch gay travel blogger couple happily based in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Their blog is about Life of two (gay) men loving and travelling the world together. 

The gay travel bloggers collect authentic and gay-friendly proofed travel information which they share through written, visual and social media content.

Karl Krause is a Blogger, Content & Social Media Manager for Snowplaza and freelance blogger for several gay travel websites.

Daan Colijn is currently working on several projects that involve immersive experiences for audiences all around the globe.

Multi-award-winner Barb Snelgrove works across several media platforms as a freelance writer for on-line publications, Columnist, TV reporter & guest (locally/nationally), and former radio host. Barb is currently the Promotions & Communications Director at Roundhouse Radio 98.3 (CIRH), Vancouver's newest FM station and of course, continues to make the occasional "guest appearance" on air! 

Barb is also known online through an active following via various social media accounts, under the moniker "megamouthmedia". Barb is an LGBTTQ2+ media marketing and social media strategist, copywriter, Emcee, and Brand influencer located in Vancouver, Canada. 


With one of the strongest LGBTTQ2+ social media bases in Canada and an international following of key LGBTTQ2+ influencers, Barb specializes in assisting Companies, Tourism Agencies, Event Producers and Non-Profit organizations connect with the online market via proven, targeted, social media strategies. 

- Kit Williamson + John Halbach EastSiders (Los Angeles, USA)

John Halbach and Kit Williamson are actors, internet entrepreneurs and husbands, best known as the producers and stars of the Emmy-nominated LGBT web series EastSiders (now available on Netflix). The couple met more than a decade ago in New York City, where they both performed on Broadway before making the move together to the west coast. Together, they produce a branded travel series for Out Magazine and edit the gay men’s travel and lifestyle blog Where Gentlemen Go. Because of their advertising background, Kit and John can offer much more than traditional “influencer activation.” They work with clients to create customized campaigns to help them reach the LGBTQ market, and offer detailed analysis reports with proven results.

- Josh Rimer (Vancouver, Canada)

In 2007 Josh Rimer had “the most discussed video of all time” on YouTube and has since uploaded hundreds of videos which now have over 10 million views. He adds two videos every week to his YouTube channel, which has over 30 thousand subscribers, and he can be seen every day on Canada’s LGBT TV station OUTtv, where his videos air between regular programming.  His focus is on showcasing LGBT-friendly travel destinations and he features a new one every two weeks across his social media accounts as well as in his show “The Travel Tidbit”.
